Abandoned Vermont Racetrack

Green Mountain Racetrack - Pownal, VT

A brief history: The Green Mountain Racetrack was a harness racing track located in Pownal, Vermont. The track was opened in 1963 and operated for over three decades, until it closed in 1993.

During its heyday, the Green Mountain Racetrack was a popular destination for harness racing enthusiasts, drawing crowds of up to 10,000 people for major races. The track featured a half-mile oval and a grandstand that could seat up to 5,000 spectators.

However, by the 1990s, the popularity of harness racing had declined, and the Green Mountain Racetrack struggled to remain financially viable. In 1993, the track's owners made the decision to close it down.

After the closure of the racetrack, the property was sold to a private developer who intended to build a golf course and housing development on the site. However, the plans fell through, and the property was left abandoned for many years.

In recent years, there have been efforts to revitalize the property and transform it into a recreational destination. The town of Pownal has explored options such as turning the former racetrack into a park, but as of now, the property remains undeveloped and abandoned.
